Help For Haiti

January 20th, 2010

By now the news of the devastating tragedy in Haiti has shocked the world. But how much has it really shocked us? We hear horrifying real life stories of struggle each and every day, but how often to we actually stop and let the reality sink in? It is easy to hear the bad news, feel sorry for those involved, whisper a quick prayer and go on about our day.

Let’s try something, let’s actually let this sink in. Don’t skim through this blog post, don’t make an excuse in your head as to why you don’t have time to read this. The fact is that you’ve probably spent hours on your computer today; chatting online, browsing Facebook and checking emails.

There are an estimated 9 million people living in Haiti, which has been devastated by corrupt government, slavery, poverty and natural disasters. Last week a magnitude 7.0 earthquake shook the country, killing an estimated hundreds of thousands of people.

Here is a country with limited resources who has been hit with a horrific natural disaster. Buildings have collapsed, children have been left orphans, many are left homeless.

Put yourself into their shoes, imagine you and your family, living your daily life and going about the usual routine. Suddenly, an earthquake shakes your home. Frantically, you run to find your children, to protect them from the crumbling ceiling, but you cannot find them.
In the aftermath, you search hysterically in the rubble that was once your home, looking for your children. With no help in site, you are left to physically pick up the brick, concrete and wood, in hopes that your children are safe. Luckily for you, they are. But they are in terrible need of emergency care, which cannot be found because as you look around, the earth has been leveled, no buildings in site, just piles of debris and the sounds of screaming mothers searching for their babies.

Doesn’t your stomach turn into knots reading that? Don’t you feel just terrible thinking of your children ever being in a situation like that? Well face reality, your children CAN be in a situation like that, and if God forbid they ever were, wouldn’t your heart just cry out for help. Help from a complete stranger across the world who sits comfortably in their home watching your world fall apart on the evening news.

Do something! Stop thinking that someone else will take care of it. Stop leaving it up to others. WE as a human race, need to bond together and help out one another.

Donate safely and securely from your own home just by texting “Haiti” to 90999. Your $10.00 donation to the American Red Cross will help out significantly! If everyone just gave $10, we could help this country rebuild itself.

So, I urge you to look at the photo below, let it sink in, and never forget it.
